San Mateo, CA SMART, or San Mateo Acting Responsibly Together, recently became the first of many cities to partner with Carbon Conscious, a customized program designed to assist municipalities with lowering their carbon footprints through technical means and community outreach. SMART is entering the second phase of a public outreach campaign that will help the City of San Mateo reach its sustainability and climate change goals.

The Carbon Conscious movement is helping local governments address recent legislation passed by the State of California that requires cities to meet greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets. As a partner of the program, the City will have access to a wide range of climate change services. Among the many benefits, the City will have access to experts in the field and to community engagement tools like a Web-based carbon counter and will receive up-to-date information on grant funding opportunities. For more information on Carbon Conscious, please visit www.carbonconscious.us.

With this added benefit to the SMART campaign, the City is asking residents and businesses to visit the carbon counter online at www.cityofsanmateo.org/smart/carboncounter to create a benchmark for their carbon footprints. After modifying a few simple behaviors, folks are encouraged to log in and take the short survey again to see how much they have lowered their personal impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

SMART will continue to reach out to San Mateo’s youth and other sectors of the community in order to educate people about reducing local greenhouse gas emissions. Upcoming summer events include participation in the 2009 Central Park Music Series, local farmers markets and homeowners association presentations. The next phase (year 2) for SMART will include the participation of businesses and schools to create a citywide effort.
